This should be the last picture of the day but it showed up here. It is a picture of the pipeline crossing the Tenana River. Still 250 miles from Valdez. |
I had zero complaints about the surf and turf dinner. Excellent steak strips, orange roughy, and clam chowder. Yum yum! |
A fellow from Brazil had ridden this KTM all of the way up here, but lost his tire to a sharp rock 4 miles south of Prudhoe Bay. |
The Dalton highway was washed out for several miles just south of Prudhoe. |
The haul road is the only supply route for the supplies used to service the 4 to 6 thousand oil field employees. |
Supplies became so short that they were starting to rashion food. |
It was a combination of thing that took the road out. The freezing of the river overflow on the east side, and the rapid thaw of the snow to the west. |
We all had to pull to the extreme right to allow this guy to go by. |
Lots of axels |
No idea what it is |
many more axles behind. |
Besides all of the axles there were two pusher trucks following him to help him up the steep grades. |
Another Lost Lake |
This one is a little bigger |
We had more fun at the other one |
I heading to Delta Jct, so I'm thinking this is the river delta. |
There is no shortage of road construction/repair in AK |
This fire is so remote it was probably started by a lightning strike. |
Beautiful mountains just north of Coldfoot |
These looked like they had giant gold nuggets in the face. |
It's called finger rock. |
From this side it looks more like cannon rock. |
More gold |
Last of the gold.....should be enough to last me. |
They told me there was a girl behind every tree in Deadhorse. They were right. |
I told Cranky about this girl we saw riding from Prudhoe to Fairbanks, AK. She had made it about 60 miles so far and was just starting her second day. |
Her name was Sophia, she is from France and flew into Prudhoe and had her bike shipped up as well. Only about 400 miles to go. I guess that is easier than the guy we saw walking and pulling a cart. |
Part of the frozen Sag river south of Prudhoe |
The general store is upstairs from the Napa store. |
The post office is in the back of the Napa store. |
They did have a lot of stuff. I just bought some stickers to plaster on my panniers and a snack for the long ride to Coldfoot. |
Memories |
Oil from the fields is pipe to the separation plant you can see far back in the picture. There the water, natural gas, and crude are separated before the crude is sent to the pipe line. |
One of Haliburton's facilities. |
These little fox pups were out playing |
Cute, mom was close by |
but a little shy |
First view of the Arctic and it is still frozen |
I hate it when they load out of order. This is the vehicle bridge and the pipeline over the Tenana River. |
Another of the River Delta |
Back at the Prudhoe GS. Pun intended. |
These young Japanese children playing on the ice in the Arctic Ocean |
Big kids playing on it too. |
I was having a bad hair day, but it was so hot I had to take my hat off. |
This guy was going out to take the arctic plunge |
I did too! |
We wanted the gals on the bus to go stand behind these trees, but it was against the rules. The words at the bottom say Prudhoe Bay National Forest. |
More of where the highway washed out. |
There are no waves in the Arctic Ocean here. |
I assume because of the ice. |
Close up of the separation plant. |
